Building Inspector III

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, performs technical and administrative work including the responsibility for on-site inspections, review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with city adopted construction codes. This position ensures that all construction within the city complies with all construction codes as amended and adopted by the State of Utah and Draper City, and other applicable city, state and federal requirements related to construction. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: - None ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Inspects construction for code compliance. - Reviews plans for code compliance. - Participate in office operations. - Investigates complaints. - Attends meetings as directed by the Chief Building Official. - Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Education – - - High school diploma or G.E.D. - Experience – - - Five years of experience inspecting construction projects or five years’ experience working in the construction industry. - License and Certification– - Certification as a combination inspector in both residential and commercial in all of the four ICC areas: building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical. Obtain Accessibility Plans Examiner certification in ANSI A117.1 within 12 months of hire. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Knowledge of – - International Residential Code and International Building Code in building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical - The principles of construction and basic planning principles - ANSI A117.1 for Accessibility - Skilled with – - Reading blueprints and verifying compliance with construction codes as amended and adopted by the State of Utah and Draper City, and general construction practices and city adopted codes - Conducting residential, commercial, and industrial inspections - Ability to – - Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with city staff and customers. - Prepare clear and concise reports - Apply word processing and other personal computer applications - Work effectively in an occasionally stressful environment. - Communicate and coordinate effectively with other city staff and representatives of other organizations to accomplish shared and multi-disciplinary tasks - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public officials, contractors, developers, and the public - Meet expected deadlines and attain measurable results WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires working outdoors. Tasks require a variety of physical activities. Regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. May be confined to small spaces to perform work. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions. Frequent exposure to high levels of noise. Operate equipment and drive vehicles. Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
