Summary: Relays and updates, to working train crews, a constant flow of customer requests and specific spotting instructions that are time critical to business units and essential to creating the most efficient use of train crew availability within the Customer Site. The Yardmaster position is for NIGHTS ONLY; shifts run 4 on 4 off rotation with 12-hour availability on duty time. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assure that all spot racks are according to spotting instructions by visual verification. Reports spot completion times to Site Manager. Approves and maintains necessary records of rail car numbers scheduled for weighing and interchange. Maintains constant communication with business units, updating status of work requested. Coordinate activities of multiple train crews to meet railroad interchange time commitments. These activities include maintaining smooth flow of interchange by makeup or breakup of trains and switching inbound or outbound rail cars. As directed performs activities of co-workers. Must be willing to work shifts and/or overtime hours during the week and/or weekends as dictated by operations. To appropriately perform the essential duties of this job, regular work attendance is required. Supervisory Responsibilities: Yardmasters maintain direct supervision over all train crews for efficient rail car movements and disposition of rail cars stored in Customer Site. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: One-year certificate from college or technical school; or 3-5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense of understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to facilitate root cause investigation meetings. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of and demonstrate competency in Customer specific data base systems; Lotus Notes or Internet Email Internet software; Excel Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s driver license and have the willingness to use personal and/or company vehicle during employment. Must possess safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities and as required by TGS at all TGS locations. Other Skills and Abilities: Must take and pass the required examinations for the described position to properly maintain competency and skills levels.
