\*\*Only hiring 1 position either, Utility in training OR Utility I depending on qualifications\*\* JOB SUMMARY Employees in this position perform a variety of semi-skilled highway maintenance tasks to assist in providing the county with safe roadways. Employees in this position may be required to perform portions or all of the duties normally falling within the current classification depending on current workload and staffing requirements. . Employees may promote to a Utility I after they have received a Class A CDL with Tanker and Manual Transmission Endorsement. Other duties may be assigned as required. **ESSENTIAL DUTIES** 1. Operates a variety of power equipment/vehicles in making minor repairs to roadways, shoulders, and related structures such as bridges and guardrails. This equipment includes: - Pickups - Water Pumps - Misc. Hand Tools - Implements inc. Chainsaws - Chipper Unit 1. Repairs roadway using cold patch and raking hot asphalt. 2. Cleans roadways and related structures by picking up rubbish and debris, sweeping bridges and traffic islands, cleaning ditches and culverts with hand shovel or mechanical equipment and generally maintains roadways in a clean condition. 3. Performs maintenance painting. 4. Assists in painting traffic arrows, crosswalks, and stop bars using templates, spray gun, rollers, and brushes. 5. Cuts brush, trees, and other vegetation from the right-of-way using a pole saw, hydraulic cutting wand chain saw, machete, ax, and powered mowers. 6. Assists in landscaping highway rights-of-way, planting and maintaining a variety of ground cover plants and trees. 7. Performs various traffic control assignments, including signing, flagging, and uses manual tools to work on posts, guardrails, signs, etc. 8. Performs rough carpentry and masonry. 9. Cleans and cares for tools and equipment; performs preventive maintenance. 10. Assists in training other personnel in the use of road equipment. 11. Responds to callout for emergency situations. **PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS** This position typically requires: Climbing Balancing Stooping, kneeling Crouching Reaching Standing Mobility Pushing Pulling Lifting Manual Dexterity Grasping Feeling Talking Hearing Seeing Repetitive motion Requires the physical strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of weather and temperature conditions. May lift and carry 50-100 pounds; work at heights, alone, and in remote areas; have exposure to smoke, fumes, weeds and plants, etc. **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** **Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:** 1. Skilled in the use of manual and power hand tools. 2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, supervisors and the general public. 3. Knowledge of work zone safety and traffic control. 4. Ability to work in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner. **Education and Experience:** 1. High school diploma or GED equivalent. 2. Ability to obtain a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker and Manual Transmission Endorsement and acceptable driving record within one year of hire date. 3. Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, Flagging, and Defensive Driving certifications. The County requires a physical examination, hearing examination, and alcohol and drug test.
