Substitute Teacher (on call) JobID: 321 Position Type: Support Staff Date Posted: 7/6/2026 Location: North Stonington Elementary School Additional Information: Show/Hide Position Title: Per Diem Substitute Teacher Position Summary Under the supervision of school administration, the Per Diem Substitute Teacher provides instructional support on an as-needed basis by assuming the responsibilities of the regular classroom teacher during absences. Substitute teachers may be assigned to a variety of grade levels and subject areas within the middle/high school and are responsible for maintaining continuity of instruction while fostering a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accept substitute teaching assignments on an as-needed basis based on district staffing needs. Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the classroom teacher. Deliver instruction and facilitate classroom activities in accordance with established lesson plans. Maintain a positive, safe, and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning. Supervise students in classrooms and other assigned areas, ensuring student safety and adherence to school rules. Manage student behavior in accordance with school and district policies. Take attendance and maintain accurate classroom records as required. Communicate with the regular classroom teacher and/or school administration regarding student progress, behavior, and any significant events that occurred during the assignment. Adapt instructional activities as appropriate to meet student needs when lesson plans require modification. Perform other duties as assigned during the substitute assignment, which may include study hall supervision, lunchroom duty, hallway monitoring, or other student supervision responsibilities. Follow all district policies, procedures, and emergency protocols. Maintain confidentiality regarding student and school information. Qualifications High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred. A degree in education or a related field is preferred. Valid state substitute teaching certification or other credentials as required by state law or district policy. Previous experience working with middle and/or high school students preferred. Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to adapt quickly to different classroom environments and instructional needs. Reliable, flexible, and able to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, and staff. Work Schedule Per diem, as-needed position during the school year. Assignments are based on district staffing needs and the substitute teacher's availability. Assignments may include single-day or multi-day placements at the middle and/or high school. Physical Requirements The position requires standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. The employee must be able to supervise students in a variety of school settings and respond appropriately to student and school safety needs.
