Senior Software Engineer (Payflip Payroll)

We are looking for a Software Engineer with 4+ years of experience in this role, with a strong backend and infrastructure profile. Frontend experience is welcome but not the focus of this role — our squad is well covered there. 🌟 OUR PRODUCT TEAM We're building our Product team at Payflip for the long run, and are looking for experienced engineers who want to play a role in growing our salary platform, bringing additional expertise on board to grow to an even more excellent product. Our current Product team consists of multiple squads that autonomously own the full lifecycle of the product, pushing it from discovery to production. You'll work together with other experienced engineers, PMs, and the CTO to deliver on an exciting product roadmap. Where core components in our stack are: - Node.js (NestJS) & TypeScript - PostgreSQL + Prisma ORM - REST/OpenAPI with generated SDKs, GraphQL at the edges - Azure + Terraform (Container Apps, VMs, networking, Key Vault) - Windows Server, SQL Server & IIS We value bringing eagerness & skill in building mature & maintainable solutions with a great DX more than an exact overlap with our tech stack. Experience in all of them is not a must, but willingness & autonomy to learn definitely is. ⚙️ THE PAYROLL SQUAD You'll join our Payroll squad, building Payflip's own payroll engine: a greenfield backend service that connects the Payflip platform to the world of Belgian payroll. That means: - Designing robust APIs and data models for payroll concepts like workers, absences and payslips. - Building reliable integrations with external payroll systems — asynchronous processing, queues and idempotent syncing. - Running part of our stack on Windows Server VMs in Azure (SQL Server, IIS, Remote Desktop), fully provisioned with Terraform. - Working in a domain where correctness and auditability matter: it's people's salaries. 🧑‍💻 ABOUT YOU You would be a good fit with our team if most of this sounds like you: - Strong backend engineering skills: API design, relational data modeling, transactional integrity, async job processing (queues, outbox pattern, idempotency) - Experience integrating third-party or legacy vendor APIs — quirky contracts, async flows and certificate-based auth don't scare you - Comfortable in Windows Server environments (RDP, IIS, SQL Server, PowerShell): you don't need to be a Windows sysadmin, but running a vendor application on an always-on Windows VM should sound like a puzzle, not a nightmare - Affinity with infrastructure-as-code: Azure, Terraform, virtual networks, monitoring - Managing technical debt pragmatically with an ability to strategically balance resilience, testing, and documentation with making quick trade-offs in order to ship products that prioritise impact or implementation. - You're a product builder, meaning you think outside of the coding and tech. You approach opportunities & problems in the squad and determine what success looks like, driving it home, collaborating with others in the product team often (designers, PMs, CTO) - Eager to help in constructing our engineering culture & practices.
