About the Registered Nurse role

Registered Nurse positions focus on delivering results in their domain. This page aggregates open Registered Nurse roles and what employers typically expect.

## Overview Our care philosophy is that of patient-centeredness in which the needs of the patient are always considered primary. We are aware that students seek our services at a time when they are most vulnerable and may be experiencing anxiety; we want to ensure that their concerns are heard and honored by our staff. However, we also see patient encounters as an opportunity to educate young adults about their health and well-being and empowering them to make healthy choices. Understanding this balance – serving student needs while supporting them to serve their own – is critical for someone in this position. The Registered Nurse provides routine patient care to clients within Medical Services, emergency nursing care, and nursing support to other departments within University Health Services. In addition, the Registered Nurse performs administrative and other essential tasks to support the delivery of high-quality healthcare. **This a part-time, day shift (6:45am-3:15pm) position at 60% duty time (3 shifts per week), including every other weekend.** ## Responsibilities **Clinical Care-80%** **Triage & Assessment** - Performs in-person and telephone triage to determine acuity and level of care needed - Conducts comprehensive nursing assessments including physical, psychosocial, emotional, cultural, and behavioral factors - Collects health histories and performs focused physical assessments - Determines need for emergency intervention, provider consultation, transfer, or follow-up care **Infirmary** - Provides independent nurse visits and brief nursing interventions - Performs admission assessments and ongoing inpatient evaluations - Implements nursing care plans according to UHS protocols - Administers medications and treatments under standing orders and provider direction - Provides monitoring, wound care, respiratory treatments, and supportive care - Evaluates patient response and modifies care as needed **Outpatient** - Provides independent nurse visits and brief nursing interventions - Supports urgent care patient flow and transitions patients to providers - Assists with procedures, nebulizer treatments, wound care, and emergency response **Education & Communication** - Educates patients about diagnoses, treatments, preventive care, and healthy behaviors - Reduces anxiety through clear, person-centered communication - Encourages participation in care plans **Documentation** - Accurately documents all encounters, treatments, medications, and immunizations in the Electronic Medical Record **Administrative Management-10%** - Assumes responsibility for on-going maintenance of a safe, hospitable, and therapeutic environment. - Notifies members of the University community when indicated, e.g., deans, administration, and Department of Public Safety. - Participates in Unit Quality Assurance activities such as narcotic counts and safety checks. o Monitors food services, janitorial services, equipment, and supplies. o Appropriate use of current computer programs. o Assumes responsibility for shift/staff coverage when needed. o Works collaboratively and respectfully with other staff members. - Supports, promotes, and participates in Continuing Quality Improvement. - Assists with the hiring process; interviews potential candidates and precepts and mentors newly hired staff members. - Attends staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned. **Leadership/Management-5%** - Delegates tasks to nursing assistants and medical assistants. - Functions as a representative of University Health Services with other members of the University community, with parents, and with area health facilities. - Assists in the development, review, and revision of patient care policies, procedures, and protocols. - Participates in special projects and outreach activities. **Training & Professional Development-5%** - Actively seeks appropriate Continuing Education opportunities. - Maintains eligibility requirements for licensure and certification. - Recognize…
