POLICE SERVICE AIDE

Assist law enforcement personnel in performing non-hazardous duties and to provide the public with a variety of community services. - Regular attendance and completion of pre-service training provided by the Hobbs Police Department. - Applicants must have passed the police officer’s entrance examination and other required examinations as determined by the Hobbs Police Department. Upon completion of training program PSA’s will assist with the following: Non-injury traffic crashes, traffic control, motorist assistance, towing of vehicles, parking enforcement, funeral escorts, vandalism/found property/petty larceny reports, close patrols of residences/businesses, other not in progress calls as determined by the Hobbs Police Department in which no or minimal follow up investigation is required. - The PSA is required to perform the duties of this position. - Works on assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action, expected to handle situations under the direction of the Field Service Division (FSD) supervisor. - Works mandatory extra duty assignments as needed. - Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies. - Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State and City laws and ordinances. - Assists traffic and patrol officers in investigation of non-life-threatening calls for service. - Patrols city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas as directed by field supervisors. Investigates and renders assistance at scenes of non-injury vehicular accidents. - Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles as necessary. - Takes measurements and draws diagrams of crash scenes if appropriate. - Assists with follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift at the direction of the FSD supervisor. - Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings. - Prepares a variety of reports and records including reports of investigation, vehicle impoundment form etc... - Undertakes community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention tips, traffic safety, etc. - Coordinates activities with police officers or other city departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies as needed. Seeks advice from the field supervisors regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned. - Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Department activities. - Maintains proficiency with authorized and issued equipment. ###### NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities. Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police service aide operating activities. Adheres to all universal blood born pathogen precautions. Follows, ensures and/or attends all scheduled training classes. Other duties as assigned. Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be able to successfully complete the Hobbs Police Department PSA training program within one year from date of hire. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: - General knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. - Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations. - Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors; Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. - Ability to meet the special requirements listed below. - Ability to learn the city's geography. - Skill in operation of listed tools and equi…
