Patient Care Extern - Interns/Externs - Variable - PT-20

The Nurse Extern is a temporary position for nursing students to practice delivering quality patient care in a variety of nursing areas. The Nurse extern will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse in providing direct and indirect patient care in accordance with common nursing functions and daily nursing plan activities. ### Responsibilities - Observes and assists with the delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process - Observes all direct patient care performed by Registered Nurses, such as patient education, medication administrations and various invasive procedures - Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides personal care, and emotional support - Performs patient care services and treatments as prescribed by the physician or as indicated by the patient's condition under the supervision of the RN - Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals - Provides or assists with patient care services, collection of specimens for diagnostic testing, and preparation of patient for surgery or other procedures - Assists with transfers of patients to and from other departments and with discharges - Follows safety rules in all areas of patient care and ensures safe patient environment - Maintains patient data and records - Communicates patient/ family health care needs to the appropriate health care provider - Reports significant events and information timely to appropriate team member - Assists with planning by sharing input from patient and family with appropriate team member - Answers telephone and call lights appropriately and timely delivering information to staff - Maintains supplies and equipment of the assigned area - Ensures all patient care and unit equipment are in proper working order - Performs courier services as requested - Maintains adequate inventory of supplies on assigned unit ### Qualifications Education: - High School or GED - Must be enrolled and completed basic medical/surgical nursing in an accredited school of nursing - Must be within 12 months of graduation - Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher Experience: - None
