The Pathologists’ Assistant provides essential technical expertise in the receipt, preparation, and examination of surgical tissue specimens. The role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of specimen accessioning, gross dissection, and frozen section support, while maintaining rigorous safety and regulatory standards for the laboratory. - Perform comprehensive gross description and dissection of both small and complex surgical specimens. - Manage specimen accessioning by obtaining and reviewing necessary clinical history, laboratory data, and imaging to ensure complete diagnostic context. - Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, ensuring strict adherence to standardized protocols and quality benchmarks. - Coordinate and execute frozen section activities and late-day dissections. - Manage the Frozen Section Laboratory, including the freezing, cutting, staining, and preparation of high-quality slides for immediate Pathologist review. - Supervise and monitor the performance of clinical staff involved in the gross description and dissection of biopsies and small specimens. - Ensure all technical staff maintain accuracy and compliance with established grossing standards. - Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant grossing environment in a state of continuous readiness for regulatory inspections (e.g., TJC). - Ensure all specimens are appropriately logged, processed, and disposed of in a timely and safe manner according to facility policy. - Collect and analyze departmental data to generate statistical reports, specifically tracking turnaround time (TAT) and laboratory productivity metrics. - Perform other related duties as required to support laboratory operations and patient care. Position Requirements: - This position requires a minimum formal education of Associate Degree or certification equivalent and a minimum of 5 years job-related experience. - Desired (not required) criteria include: Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Pathologists' Assistant in a Pathology Laboratory or Masters degree in Pathology Assistant program with no experience. - NYS Permit for a Pathology Assistant.
