Under the supervision of the Utilities Supervisor, this full-time position performs, assists in, and is responsible for, the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position operates equipment such as pumps, air compressors, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, forklifts, and other water/wastewater related equipment. Other duties may be assigned. This position is included in the departments after hours and weekend stand-by rotation. 1. Installs, maintains and repairs various components of the water and wastewater system 2. Operate a variety of moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including backhoe, single axle dump truck, dozer, loader, and truck with trailer 3. Determines equipment needed for assignment and load tools and equipment onto truck 4. Transports vehicles and equipment to job sites 5. Performs water taps, install service lines and meter boxes 6. Installs new water meter taps 7. Locates, isolates and repair leaks on water lines 8. Responds to service calls regarding water pressure and leaks, including performing pressure checks 9. Connections and disconnections of water for utility customers 10. Digs holes and trenches manually and with power equipment 11. Set up safety equipment, including barricades, to protect crew and the general public 12. Reinforces shore trenches, according to safety guidelines 13. Performs underground utility marking, as required 14. Maintains a safe work environment and demonstrate safe workplace behaviors, including wearing proper personal protective equipment and following safety rules and regulations 15. Works independently at times without close supervision and makes clear decisions 16. Essential position requiring mandatory attendance in the event of storm, disaster or other circumstantial event 17. Serve in stand-by status after regular working hours on a rotating schedule. While on standby, respond to emergency and after hour trouble calls 18. Responds to water/wastewater complaints 19. Clears stoppages on sewer lines by locating, repairing and or replacing pipes 20. Performs sewer taps 21. Repairs and replaces sewer mains and service lines 22. Checks sewer mains 23. Reads and interprets maps and drawings 24. Performs water meter reading and utility locates 25. Inspects water meter for proper operations 26. Install, maintain, remove and replace water meters, water hydrants and valves 27. Assist in repairing and maintaining lift stations by replacing pipes and pumps 28. Maintenance of equipment and vehicles according to safety and departmental procedures, including preparation of vehicle reports, maintaining correct fluid levels, safe operations, and keeping vehicles clean - Requires a high school diploma or equivalent - One (1) year of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. - Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with a good driving record. This position requires strenuous physical exertion, and applicants must be able to carry a minimum of 100 pounds. The positions require work outdoors and in occasional extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather. These positions are considered essential, and attendance is mandatory in the event of a storm or disaster.
