Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Maintenance Lead Worker for Environmental Programs provides day-to-day field leadership, coordination, and oversight of cleanup, abatement, and environmental maintenance crews. The position manages work assignments, resource allocation, safety compliance, and field documentation, and serves as acting supervisor when required while ensuring adherence to City service standards. This advanced journey-level, lead classification is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker by its formal leadership responsibilities, work planning duties, and coordination across multiple crews or field activities. The position operates under limited supervision and exercises moderate independent judgment. Forklift Operator Certification is required by the end of probation. *Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:* - Organizes, plans, schedules, and assigns daily work tasks to field crews performing dumping abatement, cleanup, tire retrieval, structure board-ups, warehouse staging, and event preparation. - Provides field direction, technical guidance, and training to Maintenance Workers, Senior Maintenance Workers, seasonal staff, and sentence workers; monitors performance and enforces safety procedures. - Prepares labor, material, and equipment estimates for assigned projects; coordinates procurement and ensures adequate inventory levels with warehouse personnel. - Safely operates and directs others in the proper use of compacting trash trucks, grapple trucks, utility trailers, front loaders, and related City vehicles and equipment. - Oversees and participates in the removal and proper handling of illegally dumped materials, hazardous debris (under authorized PPE protocols), and encampment waste, ensuring proper segregation and documentation. - Leads board-up and property securement operations for vacant structures, including basic painting, panel installation, and limited fabrication or welding where permitted. - Completes or reviews tire manifests, cost-recovery worksheets, dump slips, and related documentation for regulatory and financial tracking, using computers, tablets, or mobile devices. - Investigates and resolves routine public complaints related to illegal dumping, property debris accumulation, or unsecured structures; coordinates field response and documentation. - Supports inspection efforts to verify waste service status or assess cleanup needs for residential and commercial properties. - Ensures tools, vehicles, and equipment are operated safely, maintained properly, and stored correctly; identifies repair or replacement needs. - Assists with planning, staffing, and coordinating Adopt-a-Street events, neighborhood cleanups, community recycling activities, and other Environmental Programs initiatives. - Assists in staffing environmental information booths and providing general program awareness during community events. - Conducts tailgate safety briefings and reinforces OSHA/Cal/OSHA-compliant work practices, including PPE use, confined space considerations (as applicable), and hazard mitigation. - Reviews field records, provides input on crew performance, and ensures completion of material logs, activity reports, and work documentation. - Responds to after-hours or emergency cleanup operations as assigned. - Serves as acting supervisor during absences or as designated. - Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. **Education and…
