**JOIN OUR TEAM!** **Our officers are committed to providing and preserving an excellent quality of life and safe community for the City of Ashland.** This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill future lateral Police Officer vacancies that occur within one year in the Ashland Police Department. **Lateral candidates must be certified and have at least one year of experience as a Law Enforcement Officer.** **Incentive pay may apply for qualified candidates:** DPSST Certification: 7% for Intermediate; 12% for Advanced Longevity pay: 3% for 10 years of service; 6% for 15 years of service; 9% for 20 years of service; 12% for 25 years of service Educational incentive: 2% for AA; 3% for BA; 5% for MA **PURPOSE OF POSITION****:** To protect life and property and maintain public safety. Deter crime by enforcing local, state and traffic laws under the jurisdiction of the Ashland Police Department. Respond to calls for service, assist medical units, mediate civil conflicts, and educate the community in areas of crime prevention and personal protection. Arrest, warn and/or cite violators. Coordinate with other departments, agencies and the public in the implementation of crime prevention techniques. Prepare written documentation of incidents. Investigate and document criminal activity. Testify in court. **DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS**: Police Officer is a sworn police classification where incumbents serve as full working level classification in Police series. Incumbents perform professional, journey-level officer duties in the Department, with an emphasis on managing a wide variety of day to day operations. This class is distinguished from the higher-level class of Police Sergeant as the latter is the advanced level classification in the series where incumbents serve as first level supervisors and perform management duties in reviewing and discussing a variety of issues and policies and contributing to the development of Department goals and objectives. **SUPERVISION RECEIVED:** Works under direction of Police Sergeant and/or Deputy Chief. **ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:***The duties listed below are only intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related and/or a logical assignment to the classification.* Respond to calls, including major crimes, civil complaints, thefts, assaults, family disputes, etc., and take appropriate actions. Direct road traffic at accident/crime scenes as necessary. Perform CPR and first aid as needed. Prepare written records and reports necessary for investigations, crime prevention, prosecution and administration. Conduct investigations and interrogations, obtain evidence, interview victims and witnesses, compile information, and prepare cases for filing of charges. Testify in court as necessary. Perform various crime prevention activities, which includes dissemination of information to the general public, surveillance patrols, coordination with other departments and agencies, etc. Patrol streets, businesses and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws. Issue warnings or citations for violations. Perform security checks for suspicious persons or vehicles. Provide citizen assistance regarding such matters as stalled vehicles, crime prevention, drug resistance, traffic safety, etc. Make arrests, search and transport prisoners. Maintain satisfactory working relationships with other law enforcement agencies to coordinate activities, provide mutual assistance and general information about department activities. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas. Participate in the department's fitness program per the collective bargaining agreement; perform strenuous activities under hazardous and dangerous circumstances.
