**THE CITY OF MUSTANG** **Police Department - Animal Welfare Division** **Job Description** **JOB TITLE: Kennel Technician /Animal Control Officer** **SALARY: $18.68 per hour, depending upon experience and qualifications** **PLEASE NOTE: APPLICANTS WHO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO A RIGOROUS BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AS WELL AS A PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG SCREEN. THOSE WITH ILLICIT/ILLEGAL DRUG USE WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM CONSIDERATION.** **Notice:** *This classification is a “safety-sensitive” position as defined by the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a “safety-sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.* **Purpose of Position**: This is a non-exempt, full-time position within the City of Mustang Police Department’s Animal Welfare Division. This position is designed to be entry-level as a Kennel Technician with the possibility to move into the role of Animal Control Officer based upon experience and training received within the position. The incumbent provides services to the City of Mustang by operating within the City of Mustang Animal Welfare Center. **Reporting Relationships:** Reports to Animal Welfare Supervisor **Essential Duties:** - Upholds the values of the City and the Department and have a strong dedication to public service. - Performs animal care and treatment, maintains Center cleanliness and provides better than acceptable customer service in writing or by telephone. - Maintains safety for themselves, their co-workers, that of the public and of the animals placed in the Kennel Tech or Officer’s care. - Cleans up after animals both inside and outside the facility to include but not be limited to: the cleaning of animal kennels, cages, litter pans, water bowls, food dishes, beds/bedding, carriers, etc. - Maintains the Animal Welfare Center building as a whole (inside and out) by performing tasks to include but not be limited to: sweeping/mopping/vacuuming floors, wiping counters, taking out trash, cleaning bathrooms, cleaning windows and doors, putting away clean laundry, rotating and maintaining proper food storage, checking and replacing equipment and supplies including garbage bags, paper towels, toilet paper, tissue etc. - Assists the Animal Control Officer or Animal Welfare Supervisor with handling of fractious animals and/or euthanasia. - Prepares reports and documents duties and/or calls according to Police Department and Animal Welfare Division protocol. - The duties and responsibilities listed are not only what may be required. The duties for this role may be expanded from time to time and tasks may be added/removed or modified as deemed necessary for the safety and well-being of center staff, animals, volunteers and public visitors. **Qualifications:** - **Training and Experience** - At least one (1) year of animal handling in a professional setting; i.e., vet clinic, grooming, daycare/boarding for pets, ranch/farm, etc. is required. - **Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills** - Possess a working knowledge of domestic animal behavior, as well as some limited experience with goats, pigs, chickens and small domestic rodents. - Knowledge of contagious animal diseases and isolation protocol. - Knowledge of animal handling, including proper restraint techniques, proper safety protocol when walking/handling an animal, kenneling an animal, administering medication, feeding, watering and exercising an animal. - Ability to learn and understand veterinary medical terminology and minor procedures. - Skill in solving problems and/or ask questions when task is unclear. - Ability to maintain personal confidence and safety around animals. - Ability to remain calm…
