Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher or specialist in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students with disabilities in a special education or in general education/community learning environment; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance. Tutor individuals or small groups of students reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and assist special education students in prescribed learning activities. Assist special education students in learning proper personal hygiene and in developing self-help skills including toileting and travel which may require lifting student alone or with another Instructional Assistant or a teacher. Monitor, observe and report progress regarding student performance and behavior. Assist in supervising students during lunch time, on the playground, on field trips or when mainstreamed into the community or another class; supervise the loading and unloading of students on school buses as assigned. Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities, such as duplicating and filing instructional materials. Provide support to teacher by assisting in setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audiovisual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies. Confer with teachers concerning academic/behavior programs and materials to meet student needs; collect data necessary to support student learning. Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations. Direct group or individual activities of students as assigned. Assist in preparing instructional materials, administering and scoring tests as directed by the teacher. Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance. Participate in meetings, conferences and in-service training programs as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned.
