By providing enriching and memorable lifelong experiences, we strive to enhance the quality of life for our community by improving the physical and mental well-being of our residents. **Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities** Perform horticultural functions and landscape or general maintenance, construction, litter removal, and repair functions necessary to maintain roadways, public buildings, parks, schools, athletic fields, and other designated public areas; and may provide limited supervision to subordinate groundskeepers. - Assist in the coordination and supervision of subordinate groundskeepers. - Perform landscape and grounds maintenance services. - Operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, edging, and trimming equipment; use common gardening and hand tools; and operate a variety of motor equipment. - Collect and dispose of trash and debris. - Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of fencing. - Assist in the development and clearance of undeveloped areas. - Load and unload tools, equipment, dirt, gravel, clay, and sand for project assignments. - Assist in mulching, maintaining, and weeding plant and shrub beds, lawn areas, and walkways. Prune and trim trees and shrubs. Line athletic fields. - Perform some painting, masonry, and carpentry tasks. - Assist in the support of special events. - Work during emergencies, inclement weather, or other essential operating periods to perform vital services such as storm damage cleanup, snow removal, and other horticultural duties as required. - Work independently or with other personnel. Work is performed outside in all-weather to include extreme temperatures. Work schedules may be adjusted seasonally. Selected candidates must have a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina Selected candidates must furnish and wear steel-toed safety boots. Driver’s License (a learner permit is not a valid driver’s license), pass a pre-employment physical and have a satisfactory background check. As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided with an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building.
