## About this Job **General Summary of Position**Assumes total nursing care of specific patients under the direction of physician. Follows established nursing standards procedures and practices and gives specific patient care directions to nursing and other staff. Functions as an independent healthcare provider working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team. (Physician Assistant may be considered) **Primary Duties and Responsibilities** - Arranges for patients ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services. - Assists physicians with examinations procedures and other processes related to direct patient care. - Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. - Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission vision goals objectives and patient care philosophy. - Maintains a safe comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families and may establishes medical diagnoses and provides age-appropriate comprehensive and/or episodic care to patients presenting with acute and/or chronic medical/surgical problems in accordance with medical facility/hospital standards. - Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Maintains all required reports records statistics etc. Prepares and maintains records of patient charges. - Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel. Monitors emotional stability of patients and reports changes to physician or charge nurse. Performs basic nursing procedures including thermal applications nonsterile soaks application of simple dressing perennial care and running tests. - Performs clinical procedures within scope of practice after demonstrating proficiency in procedural skills pertinent to practice/specialty area. Prepares patients for scheduled procedures to assist in patient assessment. - Provides direct patient care evaluates outcomes consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to endure optimal patient care. - Provides preventive healthcare services to long-term patients and arranges consultations and referrals. - May perform history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate complete concise relevant and appropriate for age gender clinical problem and unit. Writes initial nursing histories assesses patients' conditions and develops individual care plans for patients assigned to the unit. - Based on work location may orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs effectively communicating positive findings to patient and referring physicians to ensure continuity of patient care. - Based on work location may prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities monitoring effectiveness of interventions. - Cardiac/Vascular locations: Provides comprehensive or episodic care to patients presenting with cardiac or vascular problems by following practice and/or hospital policies and procedures to render appropriate clinical support. - Cancer locations: Assists with care visits and documentations for patients on studies and clinical trials. Assists with clinical supervision of the infusion center. Conducts the cancer screening program at the hospital. Maintains an active presence with the hospitalist and house staff teams to ensure timely completion of hematology and oncology consultation to hospitalized patients. Provides survivorship care planning and ongoing medical visits. - MHCP locations: Handles urgent exacerbations of chronic illness new urgencies and come medical emergencies including same day or next day visits for urgent events and telephone communication with the responsible physicians.
