Contact with the general public, the comforting of patients, the reassuring of family and others in the vicinity, and cooperation with fire and police authorities are of major significance to this work. Duties are performed according to standard paramedical practices and established drug therapy protocol. Employees in this class work on rotating shifts are subject to adverse weather conditions, and their duties involve moderate physical effort. Permanent City employees will receive no promotional preference in this examination. Candidates who pass the exam and are placed on the civil service list will be retained on the list for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years after the establishment of the Eligible List. **RESIDENCY WAIVER** 30.11-2 Effective March 1, 2024, until the Philadelphia Fire Department (“PFD”) reaches 80% of its staffing complement for Fire Service Paramedic, the City’s residency requirement shall be eliminated for uniformed members of IAFF Local 22 in the Paramedic job title employed by the Philadelphia Fire Department. Once the Philadelphia Fire Department reaches 80% of its staffing complement for Paramedics, the residency requirement for uniformed IAFF Local 22 members will revert to only employees who have five or more years of service with the department not to be required to live within the City of Philadelphia but are required to reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in accordance with 30.11-1. **PREFERENCE FOR PHILADELPHIA RESIDENT** Candidates who have maintained a bona fide residence in Philadelphia for at least one year prior to the date of the civil service examination shall have priority over all other people receiving an identical test score. To receive such preference, candidates must respond to the question regarding residence on this application. This response will be used to determine eligibility for preference for residents. Documentation of residence may be required if there is any question as to whether you meet the residency preference requirements. If an applicant does not respond to the appropriate residence question, it will be assumed that the applicant does not qualify for residence preference.
