Financial Counselor

## Description **Summary/Objective** The Financial Counselor is responsible for day-to-day activities of patient accounts. This position directly oversees all inquiries from patients regarding their accounts, collections of past-due accounts, and payment plan arrangements. **Essential Functions** Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 1. Receives all calls related to patient bills, whether from patients or insurance companies. 2. Answers billing questions from patients in a clear and polite manner. 3. Handles patient and co-worker billing questions and forwards all complex problems or insurance billing issues to the Insurance Billing department. 4. Post monies to patient accounts. 5. Call patients for pre-payment prior to procedures in office to collect monies or set up payment plans. 6. Call patient with large balances to set up payment plans. 7. Speak to patients in office with large balances in regard to setting up payment plans or rescheduling appointments. 8. Speak with patients to explain/educate patients about their bill and patient statements and/or their insurance benefits. 9. Take deposits to bank. 10. Work all tasks in Financial Counselor and personal buckets in Athena. 11. Work unpostable and correspondence dashboard in Athena for credit card denials, unidentified patients, demographic changes, and unlocated charges. 12. Process returned mail; verify correct addresses, call patient or hospital when appropriate for corrections. Re-mail or stop statements as necessary. 13. Correct accounts and add new insurance when needed, forward accounts with incorrect insurance to Insurance Billing department to be correctly billed. 14. Work unpaid accounts; turn over to collections or write off as in house bad debt. 15. Work pre-payment report. 16. Work all patient insurance eligibility issues within Athena. 17. Run other reports as requested by the Revenue Cycle Manager. 18. Respond to voicemails, emails, and messages in a timely manner. 19. Other duties as assigned. 20. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. **Physical Demands** While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. **Position Type and Expected Hours of Work** This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 11:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. **Travel** No travel is expected for this position. **Education and Experience** 1. Minimum four years of collections, healthcare, or related experience 2.
