Position Summary: The Environmental & Physical Education Guide implements Breakthrough Montessori's environmental education, school gardening, and physical education programs for students in grades PK3–6. They are responsible for planning and teaching lessons in accordance with DC Science Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education's (OSSE) physical education standards, and the developmental needs of the students. The Guide is also responsible for supporting and implementing the vision of the Principal through effective curriculum design, cross-curricular collaboration, and stewardship of the school's outdoor learning environment and conservation infrastructure. This role ensures that environmental education and physical education align with Montessori values, meet DC Healthy Schools Act requirements, and foster strong communication with staff, families, and community partners. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: The Environmental & Physical Education Guide is a 10-month position. Working hours are Monday–Friday 10:45am–6:45pm. Responsibilities include the following: Curriculum, Instruction & Physical Education - Plan, develop, and deliver engaging environmental education and gardening lessons for students in grades PK3–6, with intentional connections to nature and the scientific world. - Align lesson content with DC Science Standards (with emphasis on Earth Sciences & Human Activity, Weather & Climate, Earth's Place in the Universe, Ecosystems, the Solar System, and Energy), the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the Montessori Scope & Sequence, and Common Core State Standards as applicable to science literacy and observation. - Plan and facilitate standards-based physical education instruction that meets DC Healthy Schools Amendment Act (2018) minimum requirements: 90 minutes per week for grades K–5, and 135 minutes per week for grade 6. - For Pre-Kindergarten 3 and Pre-Kindergarten 4 students, support an average of 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), including at least two 20-minute sessions of outdoor physical…
