As a police officer, he struggled to afford a modest inboard boat. Rett became a boat sales representative to purchase a family boat. Not only was he able to share his passion for watersports with his family, but he also helped many others create their boating legacy. Rett continued as a part-time sales representative until Malibu Boats offered him the Central Alabama market in 1994. In 1995 Skier’s Marine was established and was run out of Rett’s basement. During the first few years Skier’s Marine was open for business, Rett was still a full-time police officer selling boats in his off time. In its first year, Skier’s Marine sold six Malibu Boats. But, this was just the beginning. By 2011, Rett’s sons had joined the family business and opened the Athens, AL dealership. Since then, Skier’s Marine has seen growth nearing 500%. As of the fall of 2021, Skier’s Marine has broken ground on the Lake Oconee dealership.
