Under direct supervision, coordinates and participates in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in screening slides of clinical specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions. ### Responsibilities - Prepares tissue culture specimens using cytogenetics culturing and harvesting procedures. - Performs slide preparation and staining for microscopic analysis using routine banding techniques. - Selects banding technique, and stains slide to make chromosomes visible under microscope, following standard laboratory procedures. - Performs routine chromosome analysis and FISH techniques. - Maintains detailed QA/QC documentation of specimens and reagents. - Participates in and performs process improvement validation studies. - Performs all other duties as assigned. ### Qualifications - Experience in preparing and processing tissue culture specimens using cytogenetics culturing and harvesting procedures. - Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment and conduct assessments to record the lab equipment's performance. - Demonstrates excellent sterile techniques. - Ability to operate in a fast paced environment with established time constraints. - Ability to communicate complex Genetics concepts. - Ability to routinely safeguard and handle irretrievable specimen types. - Strong verbal and written communication skills. Education: - Bachelors degree in Cytogenetics from a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), or a Bachelors degree in the biological, chemical and/or medical sciences is required. Experience: - One (1) year experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory is preferred. Additional Licenses/Certifications: - Certified or eligible to take the Clinical Cytogenetics Board of Certification exam given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). *This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.* ### About the Company **Benefits Overview** UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Two vision plan options that offer either standard or enhanced vision benefits. **Disability** - Employees can enroll in the Disability Insurance which provides income if a non-work related illness or injury prevents you from working. **FSAs** - Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses. **Retirement** - Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees.
