Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for working the school zones within the City limits in the mornings and afternoons in order to assist children in crossing the streets and ensure safe movement of vehicles during these pivotal times. **THIS IS A SEASONAL, EVENT-RELATED POSITION EXEMPT FROM CIVIL SERVICE STATUS** WORK HOURS: Typical work hours are 7:00 A.M. - 8:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday PAY RATE: $25.00/event which equals $50.00/day. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Directs traffic at assigned school zones for one hour at the beginning and ending of each school day. Safely assist pedestrians, especially children, in crossing streets at designated crossings and intersections. Monitor traffic conditions and identify safe opportunities for crossing. Coordinate and time the stopping of vehicular traffic in such a way as not to cause congestion. Use hand signals, stop paddles, whistles, or flags to control traffic when necessary. Remain alert to changing traffic patterns and pedestrian activity. Promote safe crossing behaviors and educate students on proper crossing procedures. Report unsafe conditions, traffic violations, or hazards to supervisors or local authorities. Maintain a visible presence to deter unsafe driving behaviors. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of basic traffic laws and pedestrian safety rules. Ability to follow safety procedures and instructions. Good judgment and strong attention to detail. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and school staff. Ability to stand outside for extended periods and work in varying weather conditions while remaining alert and focused. Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility. Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Ability to perform mild physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of walking, balancing, and full arm motions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position consists of primarily light work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 pounds (or less) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull or otherwise move objects. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires some training and/or experience to select from a limited number of solutions the most appropriate actions or procedures in performing the job. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Familiarity with basic traffic laws and pedestrian safety practices. Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age and successfully pass background check and employee physical. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Previous experience working with children or in safety/security roles.
