## Description The Chemist is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by performing chemical and bacteriological analyses to ensure the quality, safety, and regulatory compliance of materials, processes, and wastewater treatment operations. This position provides accurate laboratory data to support operational decision-making while maintaining a safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory environment. **Essential Duties and Responsibilities** Conduct chemical and bacteriological analyses using ASTM, Standard Methods, and approved laboratory procedures. Operate analytical instrumentation including Gas Chromatography (GC), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and other laboratory equipment. Perform wastewater, petroleum, petrochemical, and environmental analyses including:BOD, CBOD, COD, TOC TSS, MLSS, Ammonia Nitrogen, Alkalinity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen Temperature Percent Solids/Moisture Organic Chlorides BS&W Food-to-Mass Ratios Metals Analysis Prepare chemical reagents and solutions according to established formulas and procedures. Maintain laboratory records, raw data sheets, spreadsheets, and laboratory reporting systems. Complete laboratory reports accurately and in a timely manner. Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of laboratory equipment. Clean, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas. Verify proper sample collection methods and obtain process samples as needed. Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards, safety requirements, and company policies. Maintain current knowledge of laboratory analytical methods and reporting techniques. Assist with investigations and troubleshooting of inconsistent analytical results. Support operational and environmental compliance objectives. Perform other duties as assigned. **Required Qualifications** **Education** High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree or college coursework in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field preferred. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or related scientific discipline preferred. **Experience** Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a wet chemistry laboratory preferred. Experience performing wastewater analysis strongly preferred. Experience working with wastewater, chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products preferred. Experience operating analytical instruments such as GC, ICP, and XRF preferred. **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities** Knowledge of chemical and bacteriological testing methods and laboratory procedures. Understanding of ASTM standards and laboratory analytical methods. Ability to conduct laboratory analyses independently with limited supervision. Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. Ability to maintain records, compile reports, and communicate findings effectively. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, spreadsheets, and laboratory software. Ability to learn company-specific software applications and laboratory systems. Ability to interpret graphs, control charts, technical instructions, and laboratory procedures. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to accurately differentiate colors. **Physical Requirements** Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, and use laboratory measuring equipment. Regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb stairs and ladders for sample collection and verification activities. Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to wastewater, petroleum products, chemicals, and associated odors within OSHA permissible exposure limits. Ability to perform close visual work and accurately distinguish colors. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in a wastewater treatment and oil recovery laboratory.
