Keep Our Students Moving Safely The Lafayette School Corporation is seeking a skilled and dependable Bus Mechanic to join our Transportation Department. Our mechanics play a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of a fleet that transports thousands of students each day. REPORTS TO Director of Transportation POSITION SUMMARY The Bus Mechanic performs preventative maintenance, repairs, diagnostics, and safety inspections on school buses and other corporation-owned vehicles. This position ensures that all transportation vehicles meet or exceed federal, state, and local safety requirements while helping maintain a safe, dependable fleet for students and staff. EMPLOYMENT TERMS 12-Month Position (260 Days) Full-Time QUALIFICATIONS Required High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel engine systems. Ability to safely operate shop equipment and diagnostic tools. Strong problem-solving and communication skills. Eligible to obtain an Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Preferred Two years of technical automotive and/or diesel mechanic training. Experience maintaining heavy-duty trucks, buses, or diesel equipment. Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES Perform preventative maintenance on school buses and corporation-owned vehicles. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, suspension, and engine-related issues. Perform state-required school bus safety inspections and assist with annual inspection programs. Maintain accurate maintenance records and repair documentation. Operate computerized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot vehicle systems. Perform welding and fabrication as needed for vehicle repairs. Maintain shop equipment, tools, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition. Assist in maintaining an adequate inventory of repair parts and supplies. Respond to emergency vehicle breakdowns as needed. Serve as a substitute school bus driver when necessary. Work collaboratively with transportation staff to maintain an efficient and reliable fleet. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed primarily in a transportation maintenance facility. Frequent exposure to diesel engines, vehicle exhaust, grease, dirt, noise, and changing weather conditions. Requires the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to all applicable safety procedures. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods. Ability to frequently lift, carry, and move heavy parts and equipment. Sufficient strength, agility, and manual dexterity to safely perform vehicle maintenance and repair duties.
