About the Role We build production systems for clients where the backend has to be correct, scalable, and observable. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you design and build the services, APIs, and data layers that the rest of the product depends on. You'll work inside a Monks delivery team, alongside clients, product, and other engineers, owning the parts of the system that have to be right. We're all-in on agentic engineering. Tools like Claude Code and Codex are part of our everyday workflow, and we're looking for people who are genuinely fluent working alongside AI coding agents and excited to push those practices further. Who You Are Ownership-minded: you treat the services you build as yours to keep healthy. Rigorous: correctness, performance, and observability are habits, not afterthoughts. A pragmatic problem-solver: you build the simplest thing that scales. A clear communicator: you explain technical trade-offs plainly. What You'll Do Design, build, and maintain scalable services in Node / TypeScript. Design and implement REST (and where it fits, GraphQL) APIs. Model data and safeguard its integrity and performance in PostgreSQL. Review code, including AI-generated code, for quality and consistency. Troubleshoot and resolve complex backend issues. Contribute to the team's standards, tooling, and architecture. What You Bring 5+ years in backend development with strong Node / TypeScript. Solid REST API design and implementation. Strong PostgreSQL and relational data modeling. Experience building on AWS (e.g. Lambda, SQS, SNS, S3). A good grasp of service architecture and distributed systems. Good testing habits. Strong English communication skills. Comfortable in a fast-paced, agile consulting environment. Extra Credit You've integrated LLMs or built AI-backed services. Experience with event-driven systems and message queues. Docker and Kubernetes. Depth in another ecosystem (Python, Go) you can bring across.
