In 2019, the City of Long Beach implemented the Compassion Saves model of shelter operations which ensures that all healthy and treatable animals are saved. The mission of the Long Beach Animal Care Services Bureau is to ensure “Compassion Saves” by supporting the people and animals of our community through outreach, education, guidance, and support services. We protect shelter animals by creating an environment of care through enrichment and innovative programs, and by providing public safety and the humane treatment of animals to nearly 600,000 residents in five cities. With a staff of over 50 employees, and an annual operating budget of over $7.8 million, the Bureau cared for more than 5,000 live animals in 2025. **The Animal Care Services Bureau is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for a full-time Animal Care Volunteer Coordinator (Public Health Associate II) position. There is currently one (1) full-time opening. Scheduled shifts may vary by week, but this position will work 40 hours per week, Wednesday through Sunday (Monday and Tuesdays off). Day shifts are typically assigned, but occasional evenings are required.** - Actively recruit volunteers through the use of the website, print media, community calendars, public speaking, attendance at community meetings and events, etc.; - Research, devise, and implement effective volunteer recruitment and retention strategies; - Train, mentor, and serve as initial primary contact for all volunteers; - Prepare for, schedule, and provide regular volunteer orientations; - Keep all volunteer materials and programs up to date, and provide all volunteers with appropriate orientation materials; - Assist with enrichment program in cooperation with Behavior Coordinator; - Work closely with Community Information Specialist to attend Long Beach Animal Care Services events and ensure appropriate volunteer staffing at both on and offsite events; - Uphold the shelter’s values and mission statement during interactions with the public and other staff; - Manage volunteer database using volunteer management software; - Prepare for and lead regular informational meetings with volunteers; - Work closely with the Adoption team to assist in adoption-related activities and volunteer training; - Send out a monthly newsletter to all volunteers with updates, events, and other pertinent information; - Perform other related duties as required. This position is open to all candidates meeting the following minimum qualifications: - High school diploma or equivalent; - Must be at least 18 years of age; - Must possess a valid driver's license, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments. - Two (2) years experience (paid or volunteer) working in an animal shelter or other official animal welfare organizations; - Must be able to safely and humanely handle and restrain cats and large dogs up to 50 pounds; - Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: - One (1) year professional experience coordinating a volunteer program; - Relevant certifications in animal training and/or behavior; - Bilingual speaking ability.
