Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. QUALIFICATIONS: Special Knowledge/Skills: All candidates will be assessed by the District on their ability to read, write, and speak in English. All candidates must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak at the 8th grade level. Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with passenger and school bus endorsement Must have "P" Passenger Endorsement Must have "S" School Bus Endorsement Must be 18 years of age Prior to and during employment, must have a criminal history record check that does not include a felony and/or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to communicate effectively Knowledge of student discipline procedures Ability to manage student behavior Ability to operate bus Must be able to work on evening shifts after 2:30 p.m. as assigned MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Vehicle Operation Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules as required. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities, UIL and special events (often in evenings, nights, or weekends) as required. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports. Keep records on bus mileage, fuel and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. Maintain and keep updated records on bus route schedules and maps, daily student counts, and mileage, fuel and oil consumption. Student Management Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street. Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior. Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems by appropriate administrator. Instruct student on safe riding rules and regulations. Safety Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector, etc. Conduct annual bus evacuation drills, as required by the Department of Education, and implement evacuations as required in an emergency. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately. Increase safe operation(s) during inclement weather. Report any hazardous conditions along the route. Other Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office. Work irregular hours as required.
